Max Whitlock and co claim men’s gymnastics team gold for England at Commonwealth Games

Max Whitlock, Nile Wilson, Courtney Tulloch, James Hall and Dominick Cunningham have won the gold medal for England in the men’s gymnastics team event at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Coomera.

Whitlock, the double Olympic champion, received the top scores with his floor and pommel routines to clinch the victory alongside his team-mates. Their total score of 258.950 left them more than 10 points clear of Canada (248.650) in second place. The Scotland team of Frank Baines, Hamish Carter, Kelvin Cham, Dan Purvis and David Weir took the bronze with 240.975.

Whitlock is currently focusing on increasing the difficulty levels on his favoured two pieces of apparatus as opposed to the all-around competition.

Whitlock said: “It was quite a different experience for me dropping to two pieces and then having to wait for the other guys.

“It was difficult but it’s something I’ve learned from this competition. The team did incredibly well and I’m really pleased with what we’ve done.”

Without Whitlock in the all-around competition,¬†Wilson and Hall qualified in first and second places respectively for the men’s all-around final.

Wilson overcame a wrist injury to get the highest score on the high bar, while a consistent Hall performed well and trailed his team-mate by less than two points.

Men’s Team Final:

2: Canada – 248.650
