August 21, 2007: Shunsuke Nagasaki won the 42nd Japanese University Championship held in Odate on August 17-19, 2007, by beating Masaki Ito. In the women's, Naoko Nishida prevailed.

The city of Odate in the Akita prefecture hosted the 42nd Japanese University Championship (a.k.a., All-Japan Student Championship, or Japanese Collegiate Championship).  The scores from the preliminaries were carried over to the finals.

In the men's, 2006 Asian Games bronze medalist Shunsuke Nagasaki (Kokushikan University), fairly easily retained his title.  Nagasaki delivered an impressive performance in the preliminaries, taking the lead with 70.40 pts thanks to the best optional of the whole competition that scored 40.10 pts with a 15.70 pt tariff.  In a final where Nagasaki competed after all rivals, who for most of them struggled in the final, Nagasaki relied on his consistency, performing his 15.70 pt tariff again.  The 2007 Lake Placid and Kunshan World Cups bronze medalist obtained 39.10 pts, and captured the gold medal with 109.50 pts.

The silver medal went to 2007 Ostend World Cup bronze medalist Masaki Ito (Kanazawa Institute University - pictured on the right).  Ito performed strongly in the preliminaries, taking the second place with 68.90 pts thanks to an optional that obtained 40.00 pts (15.30 pt tariff).  In the final, Ito proved to be shaky and failed to perform as brilliantly as hoped.  Ito obtained 34.00 pts with a 12.20 pt tariff, finishing with 102.90 pts.  Ito's disappointment came right after Hideyasu Ishikawa's (Waseda University) disappointment.  Ishikawa was solidly in 3rd place after the preliminaries, having scored 66.40 pts with a 15.60 pt tariff that obtained 37.80 pts.  Unfortunately, Ishikawa could not complete his routine in the final and finished in 7th place.  2006 Indo-Pacific Champion Tomoyuki Baba, who was in 4th place before the final with 64.60 pts (14.40 pt tariff), also failed to complete his routine in the final as he crashed right after the half out triffis pike that kicked off his routine.  Takeshi Imai (Kanazawa Institute University) jumped on the opportunity created by Ishikawa's and Baba's mishaps, and took the bronze medal with 101.50 pts (14.10 pt tariff) moving up 2 spots in the final thanks to a routine that obtained 37.00 pts.  Yohei Rokudai came in 4th with 91.50 pts despite struggling in the final.

In synchronized trampoline, Shunsuke Nagasaki-Masaki Ito (138.60 pts) won in a landslide, scoring 50.10 pts (14.50 pt tariff) in the final, but also helped by the crash from the pair Tomoyuki Baba-Hideyasu Ishikawa, who were in a solid 2nd place before the final.

In the women's, Naoko Nishida (Higashi Osaka University - pictured on the left), who won the bronze medal at last year's event, prevailed with 92.50 pts after stepping up her difficulty to 10.50 pts in the final (scoring 33.10 pts).  The silver medal was captured by Mika Futagi (Kanazawa Institute University), who obtained 91.30 pts after performing the best routine of the competition in the final (33.20 pts with a 10.30 pt tariff).  Haruka Nakata (Kanazawa Institute University) came in 3rd with 90.00 pts (9.60 pt tariff).  Yukari Hata, who was in 2nd place before the finals, could not hold on to her position, and finished 4th with 89.90 pts, losing the bronze medal for only 0.10 pts.  Asami Fukuo was 5th with 89.10 pts 9.30 pt tariff), followed by Kaori Takahashi (88.10 pts with a 9.80 pt tariff).  Japanese international Yoko Seto crashed in the preliminaries.  However, she bounced back by winning the synchro title paired with Mika Futagi (124.20 pts).
