    2007 German International University Championship

February 6, 2007: Dutch international Mirjam Steinebach and German Arvid Kuritz won the individual gold medals at the German International University Championship held in Freiburg, Germany on January 27, 2007.

 

The University of Freiburg in Germany hosted the German International University Championship (Internationale Deutsche Hochschulsportmeisterschaft - IDHM) on January 27, 2007.  The organization of this international competition was part of the celebration of the 550th anniversary of the University of Freiburg.  

Athletes from Universities of 7 countries (Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Portugal, Scotland, France, and Austria) competed.  Overall, in the senior category, 69 women and 43 men from approximately 30 universities, mostly German universities but also from universities located in Hawaii (USA), Groningen (the Netherlands), Glasgow (Scotland), Graz (Austria), Porto (Portugal), and Strasbourg (France), performed in a friendly atmosphere.

In the women's, Dutch internationals Mirjam Steinebach and Karin de Vries (pictured on the right), both from the University of Groningen, dominated the competition.  Steinebach took the gold medal with 94.10 pts despite competing a reduced difficulty (9.00 pts).  Karin de Vries took the silver medal with 91.90 pts (9.30 pt tariff).  German DMT international Christina Jansen (MH Hannover) took the bronze medal with 89.70 pts (8.80 pt tariff).  Last year's winner, Katharina Ludwig, took the 7th place.

In the men's, Arvid Kuritz (PH Schwaebisch Gmuend), who is 2000 European Youth Champion Karsten Kuritz' brother and a member of the German national team in acrobatic gymnastics, took the gold medal with 100.50 pts (10.80 pt tariff).  Ingo Krueger (MH Hannover) finished 2nd with 97.10 pts (10.90 pt tariff), followed by Sven Chmilecki (University of Hamburg - 93.40 pts).  Last year's winner, Chiel van der Vegte (University of Groningen) finished only 19th.  2003 World Champion Henrik Stehlik was the winner of the competition in 2005.

The team event was won by the University of Groningen (NED) led by Steinebach and de Vries, who were seconded by van der Vegte and Roland Klein.  WG Hannover (GER) and the University of Graz (Austria) joined them at the award ceremony. 

Steinebach-de Vries also won the synchro competition with 120.10 pts, as did Kuritz and Chmilecki in the men's.
