The Brazilian Championship in trampoline, tumbling, and double mini-trampoline (DMT) in the elite and junior categories took place in Curitiba, in the state of Parana, on November 23-26, 2006. 63 athletes from 9 teams competed. The Minas Tenis Clube was the most successful team at this 2006 Brazilian Championship.
Gabriel Machado, 19, from Minas Tenis Clube, won the men's elite individual competition in trampoline, and the overall individual competition. 2005 Brazilian Champion Rafael Andrade, 20, from Ulbra, took the second place in individual trampoline as well as in DMT. The Minas Tenis Clube took the second place in the team event.
In the women's elite competition, Giovanna Bastos (pictured on the right) became the 2006 Brazilian Champion. Bastos, 17, delivered a convincing performance, obtaining a score of 36.00 pts with a 12.20 pt degree of difficulty. Bastos is from the Tatiana Figueiredo Club. Paired with her teammate Bruna Garambone, Bastos won the gold medal in synchro at the 2005 International Age Group Competition (15-16 age group). Renata Teles took the 3rd place in individual at the 2006 Brazilian Championship and led her Minas Tenis Clube team to victory in the team competition. Minas Tenis Clube also won the team titles in women's elite tumbling, women's junior tumbling, and women's elite DMT. Ulbra won the junior team competition in the men's trampoline event.
In other Brazilian news, Rafael Andrade was picked Brazilian trampolinist of the year by the Brazilian Olympic Committee. Andrade finished 4th at the 2006 Pan American Championships. He also qualified to compete at the 2007 Pan American Games. An award ceremony will be held on December 12, 2006 at the Municipal Theater in Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian Olympic Committee picks the best athlete in 49 different sports, and the best athlete of the year is awarded based on a popular vote.
The award covered trampoline for the first time in 2001. The first recipient was 1998 DMT World Champion Rodolfo Rangel. Anna Paulo Milazzo was the recipent of the Brazilian trampolinist of the year award four consecutive times (2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005). In 2005, she ranked 20th at the World Championships and competed a 13.70 pt routine. Milazzo apparently stopped competing this year.
In other South American news, Brazil and Argentina held a 2-country meet called Desafio Cup in Canoas, located in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, on November 11, 2006. 115 Brazilian athletes from 8 teams and 31 Argentinean athletes from 4 teams competed in age groups in trampoline, tumbling and DMT.
