The 2006 Bundesliga opened yesterday. The Bundesliga is a league where German teams face each other over seven regular season matches before a final meet, which will be held in Goettingen this year. Each team has to line up five athletes who have to perform a compulsory and two optionals. This league championship has been held every year since 1973.
The first day of regular season face-offs started with a battle between two the favorite teams to win the Bundesliga championship: the defending champions Frankfurt Flyers usually featuring twins Markus and Michael Kubicka and Moldavian international Vladimir Cojoc versus 9-time Bundesliga champions MTV Bad Kreuznach usually featuring Olympic Champion Anna Dogonadze and German internationals Adam Goetz, Martin Gromowski and Jessica Simon.
In the absence of Markus Kubicka, the Frankfurt Flyers made the difference over Bad Kreuznach in the last routine, which was performed by Cojoc. In the end, Frankfurt barely edged Bad Kreuznach 398.40 pts to 397.20 pts at home. Michael Kubicka, who finished 4th at the 2006 European Championships, Alexej Kessler, Kyrylo Sonn and Ivano Monaco also contributed to Frankfurt's success. The MTV Bad Kreuznach had to compete without Olympic Champion Anna Dogonadze due to the flu and Martin Gromowski due to back spasms. Adam Goetz (pictured on the right), who recently won a silver medal at the Savognin World Cup, proved to be the best trampolinist that day with a score of 107.50 pts (40.20 pts for his first optional). Jessica Simon also delivered a nice performance with 99.90 pts (36.20 pts and 36.30 pts for her optionals).
In the other face-offs of the first day of Bundesliga, the TGJ Salzgitter, usually featuring 2003 World Champion Henrik Stehlik, German internationals Dennis Luxon, Catherine Auerbach, Lara Hueninghake and Slovak international Katharina Prokesova, had no trouble beating the TuRa 88 Duisburg 392.80 pts to 346.60 pts in Salzgitter.
The TV Schaafheim of German international Michael Serth lost at home against the TV Weingarten of German international Sarah Syed 350.80 pts to 352.00 pts.
