The 15th Asian Games, the equivalent to the Olympics at the Asian scale, will take place in Doha, Qatar, at the beginning of December 2006. A trial took place on May 11, 2006, in Wajima in the Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, to determine the athletes who will represent Japan at this event. This trial was the 2nd trial organized.
In the men's, Yasuhiro Ueyama continued to surf on the wave of success after winning the Ghent and Krasnodar World Cups within the past month. The 2005 World silver medalist won the trial with a total of 111.10 pts, thanks to his usual 15.50 pt routine that obtained 40.10 pts each time. The 2nd place was taken by Shunsuke Nagasaki (pictured on the left) with 108.80 pts, confirming that his spot in the final of the Ghent World Cup was no fluke. Nagasaki performed a very nice last routine that scored 39.80 pts (15.30 pt tariff). His first routine obtained 31.20 pts, which is 0.10 pts more than the new official world record established by German Khnychev (RUS) this past week-end at the World Cup in Krasnodar. Unfortunately, Nagasaki's mark cannot become the new world record as it was not performed in an FIG sanctioned event.
The 3rd place of the trial was taken by Masaki Ito (pictured on the right) with 107.80 pts. Ito, who finished 4th at the Krasnodar World Cup this past week-end, delivered two solid optionals that obtained 39.20 pts and 38.90 pts. He performed only a 14.40 pt optional. Manabu Yamaguchi took the 4th place with 107.50 pts (14.90 pt tariff) with two optional that obtained 39.20 pts and 39.00 pts. Takayuki Kawanishi finished 5th with 106.00 pts (15.10 pt tariff in his first optional). The disappointment came once again from Tetsuya Sotomura. The 2005 World bronze medalist had disappointing showings at the Pacific Alliance Championship and the Ghent World Cup earlier this year, before withdrawing from the Krasnodar World Cup. We are told that he may be suffering from a loss of skills. This time, he performed only a 13.70 pt tariff and finished 6th with 105.20 pts. Masaki Hitomi finished only 7th due to difficulties to stabilize at the end of his last routine. Veteran Daisuke Nakata took the 8th place. Difficulty expert Takashi Sakamoto limited himself to a 15.00 pt tariff this time.
In the women's, Hiromi Hanmoto won over Haruka Hirota and Kazuyo Minato.
