October 2, 2009: The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro was voted today the host city of the XXXIst Olympic Games to be held on August 5-21, 2016. These Olympic Games will be the fifth Olympic Games to feature a trampoline event.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) led by IOC President Jacques Rogge announced today that the 2016 Olympic Games, officially named 2016 Summer Olympics, Games of the XXXI Olympiad, will be hosted by the city ofRio de Janeiro,Brazil. The Brazilian host city was announced at the 121st IOC session held today inCopenhagen,Denmark.
The bidding process kicked off in May 2007. Seven cities completed official bids to hold the 2016 Olympic Games:Rio de Janeiro,Madrid,Spain,Tokyo,Japan,Chicago,United States,Baku,Azerbaijan,Doha,Qatar, andPrague,Czech Republic. A short list of four cities (Rio de Janeiro,Madrid,Tokyo, andChicago) was announced on June 4, 2008.
Today’s IOC Session in Copenhagenfirst eliminated Chicagoin the first round of voting as Madridreceived 28 votes, Rio 26 votes, Tokyo22 votes, and Chicago18 votes. In the second round, Tokyowas eliminated with only 20 votes to Rio’s 46 votes, and Madrid’s 29 votes. In the third and final round, Rio de Janeiroearned 66 votes to Madrid’s 32 votes. Tokyoand Madridhad earned the top scores from the Evaluation Commission led by Nawal El Moutawakel.
It will be the first time thatRio de JaneiroorBrazilis hosting the Olympic Games. Actually, it will be the first time thatSouth Americais hosting the quadrennial multi-sport event. Rio de Janeirohad unsuccessfully put bids to host the 1936, 1940, 2004, and 2012 Olympic Games.
The event is scheduled to take place on August 5-21, 2016. It is supposed to feature 26 sports and a total of 38 disciplines.
The heart-shaped logo of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games is supposed to be reminiscent of the Sugarloaf landmark and represent Brazilian passion and enthusiasm for sports. The official slogan of the event is “Live your passion.”
Trampoline was introduced to the official Olympic program at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. The first Olympic Champions in trampoline were Irina Karavaeva (RUS) and Alexander Moskalenko (RUS). At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, the winners were Anna Dogonadze (GER) and Yuri Nikitin (UKR). At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, He Wenna (CHN) and Lu Chunlong (CHN) were crowned in front of their home crowd. Rowland Wolfe (USA), then 17, was also crowned Olympic Champion in tumbling, a discontinued event, at the 1932 Olympic Games inLos Angeles,United States.
The 2012 Olympic Games will take place inLondon,United Kingdom, from July 27 through August 12. The fifth Olympic Champion titles in the men’s and women’s trampoline events will thus be decided inBrazil.
Rio de Janeirowas also the host city of the XVth Pan American Games in 2007, the first since 1959 to feature a trampoline event. The trampoline Pan American Games Champions crowned in Rio de Janeirowere Karen Cockburn (CAN) and Chris Estrada (USA).
The trampoline event of these 2016 Rio Olympic Games, as well as the artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics competitions, is supposed to take place at the Rio Olympic Arena, also known as HSBC Arena, a 15,000-seat venue built for the 2007 Pan American Games.
Note thatRio de Janeirowill be one of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which will offer an opportunity to test some of the infrastructure to be used at the 2016 Olympic Games.
